KPFF Consulting Engineers, an industry leader in structural and civil engineering and protective design services, has been contracted by the Maplewood Memorial Library to provide structural engineering services on a 33,177-square-foot renovation project that includes new construction. A community institution in Maplewood, New Jersey since 1955, the library has been awarded $8.3 million by the Library Construction Bond Act to implement the critical improvements to the building’s infrastructure.
The existing library comprises the original 1955 building with an addition built-in 1967. The renovation will expand the current 24,973-square-foot building with a vertical addition that will add 8,204 square feet of space, allowing for better circulation. The additional space will also provide new computer and technology spaces as well as an expansion of the library’s current collection of books. The renovation will also accommodate new meeting rooms, assembly spaces, study carrels, and additional community spaces.
The main entrance of the library will be redesigned to feature a focal entry point, while major public spaces will all be located on the first floor and centrally located elevators and restrooms will eliminate current barriers to accessibility. A new 233-seat community room will offer exterior access for use after library hours and will incorporate state-of-the-art audio and video technology with equipment for the hearing impaired, as well as a full-service kitchen. The updated library will include designated spaces for children and adults, with quiet areas for study and individual work as well as gathering spaces for group projects.
“We are honored to be part of a project that is providing crucial services to the community, working closely with the project team, we look forward to providing a space that Maplewood residents can be proud of for years to come.”
Spiro Kremmidas SE, New York Principal, KPFF
The renovation is scheduled to be completed in 2022 and will follow public health guidelines in the wake of COVID-19 to allow for social distancing.
