On Tuesday, November 16th, leading accounting and advisory firm, Anchin hosted “Building a New Era: Opportunities and Challenges for Design and Construction” as part of their State of the Construction Industry event. The conference was presented in cooperation with the New York Building Congress (NYBC), the American Council of Engineering Companies of New York (ACEC New York), and the Subcontractors Trade Association (STA).
This was a great opportunity to hear about new trends, ideas and opportunities from some of the top executives, CEOs and CFOs in the construction, architecture, engineering and real estate industries all in one place. The event’s insightful panel was moderated by Johnny Evers, President and CEO of ACEC New York, and included Greg Kelly, President and CEO of STV Group; Julia Murphy, Managing Principal and USA + Canada East Practice Leader for SOM; and Elizabeth Velez, President of the Velez Organization and Chairperson at New York Building Congress as panelists.
“Companies are cementing their commitment to New York City from Google to Tik Tok to Regen Lab. It’s time to reimagine our future and jump start our economy,” said keynote speaker, Elizabeth T. Arnaiz, AIA, Executive Vice President, Capital Division, New York City Economic Development Corporation. “If I’ve learned anything over the past year, it’s that we cannot have good economic health without public health.”
The discussion among the panelists included topics such as using data to optimize safety for more efficient project delivery, increased access to sustainable buildings and prevalence of public health practices, and large investments in projects like new transportation tunnels under the Hudson River and improvements to the MTA system. Additionally, a renewed focus on hiring within the communities in which the construction is taking place was discussed, as well as placing more importance on the sustainability, carbon footprint and efficiency of buildings, not to mention many other important trends and ideas in the industry that will only gain importance in the coming years.
Phillip Ross, Anchin Partner and Leader of their Architecture & Engineering and Construction Industry Groups, said during the event: “The construction industry is…becoming more sophisticated through the use of building technology and big data, which informs smarter, safer and more efficient project delivery, and these projects are transforming skylines as well as providing new opportunities in our neighborhoods.”
