KPFF Consulting Engineers, an industry leader in structural and civil engineering and protective design services, has been recognized with the Best Use of Labels award in the annual Canstruction competition. Canstruction is an international hunger relief charity that raises millions of pounds of food each year for local food banks. Each year, Canstruction chapters host competitions where teams get the chance to show off their design skills and work together to build and exhibit jaw-dropping and innovative structures.
KPFF purchased over 2,000 cans to provide food donations for families in need, displaying them prominently at Brookfield Place located at 230 Vesey Street. The structure created by the KPFF team stands at 19 cans tall, 27 cans long, and three cans wide. The display depicts an image of a baseball player representing the mission to fight hunger with three strikes.
Strike one is swinging for social change by recognizing inequality and a lack of access to healthy and sustainable food sources. Many families in New York and around the country do not have access to the resources necessary to provide healthy and sustainable food for their families and are often left with unhealthy and undesirable alternatives. The second strike is pitching for food education by encouraging people to learn more. Because the average American may not have adequate education regarding the food insecurity that affects many people in our local communities, it is important to encourage those individuals to learn more by providing educational resources. The third strike is teeing people up to make the best nutritional choices for themselves and their families. We can all come together as a team to throw hunger a curveball.
“We are proud to have contributed to such a great charity that helps families in need,” said Spiro Kremmidas, PE, SE, New York Principal, KPFF. “This competition provides us with the opportunity to collaborate as engineers to build a structure that was not only fun to build but also help our local communities.”
The Best Use of Labels award was presented for the most creative use of labels to form a design. The award is one of six categories of Canstruction awards given to participants. The citywide competition also allows participants to submit virtually with a minimum goal to raise $1,500 among a chapter or $1,000 for an individual.
