Swinerton completes $43M in contract value for the Long Beach airport new ticketing lobby and checked baggage inspection system (CBIS) facility, which allow for more efficient TSA screening : An additional $38 million construction phase will improve functional flow from curb to gate

LONG BEACH, Calif –Swinerton, a California-based builder with more than 130 years of experience, announced the completion of Long Beach Airport’s (LGB) New Ticketing Lobby and Checked Baggage Inspection System (CBIS) Facility, which will allow for more efficient TSA screening. The $43 million in contract value project enhances the level of service for passengers and visitors. The new facilities opened to the public on May 4, 2022.

Features of the 16,700-square-foot Ticketing facility, which is anticipated to receive a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification, include: common use ticket counters and self-service kiosks for greater flexibility according to flight schedules and demand; ticket counters and well-positioned kiosks with non-porous, anti-microbial surfaces; ample square footage for improved passenger circulation; improved baggage checking; optimized energy performance, LED lighting and reduced indoor and outdoor water usage.

“Long Beach Airport continues to be an excellent partner to Swinerton on projects where close coordination is required to reduce security concerns, minimize interruptions and allow for continuity of building services,” said Ray Haj, senior vice president, Swinerton. “We’re thrilled to build on our rich aviation construction experience and assist LBG in delivering sustainable facilities with an ease of access and welcoming feel to travelers.”

An additional $38 million construction phase is projected and upon completion, the improvements will substantially improve the functional flow from curb to gate. Future enhancements will include mechanical and structural improvements to the Airport’s 1941 terminal building, as well as new baggage claim systems; new concession spaces; a new public plaza; restroom renovations; and new rental car counters and parking lot. 

“Swinerton constructed a beautiful new Ticketing Lobby that significantly improves the passenger experience at Long Beach Airport,” said Cynthia Guidry, Long Beach Airport Director. “We are grateful for their partnership and modernization efforts that strongly position Long Beach Airport for the future.”

With over 130 years of construction experience, Swinerton is the leader in aviation construction in the United States, recently completing the 128,000-square-foot maintenance hangar and outbuildings for Southwest Airlines at Denver International Airport. Additional aviation projects from the general contractor include: United Polaris Lounge at San Francisco International Airport, Aeroplex-Signature Hangar at Dallas Love Field and the LAX air traffic control tower.
